Male Chest Surgery - Gynecomastia Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women like breasts." Gynecomastia is actually quite common and may affect one breast or both. There is no known cause in the vast majority of cases, and surgery is the only known cure physical. In the case of obesity, weight loss can alter the condition of gynecomastia, but for many it will not eliminate it.
Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts like taking off his shirt at the beach. For men who feel embarrassed by their appearance, breast reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breast and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer and better contoured.
Procedure
Gynecomastia can be performed under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation and takes between 1 and 2 hours. Reduction in breast size can often be achieved with ultrasound-assisted liposuction. In some cases, a small incision may be necessary to do to remove the fabric. In rare cases, the skin can be removed from around the areola.
Recovery
Initial recovery time is 7 to 10 days. The full recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks. This means no heavy exercise such as lifting weights, a vigorous training in the gym, or any other strenuous activity. It may take at least 6 months to a year for the final results.
Results
After surgery, your chest will be flatter, firmer and better contoured. The results of the procedure are significant and permanent, if a stable weight is maintained. If your expectations are realistic, chances are good that you'll be very happy with your new look.
