Wood Carving: How to Make a Gouge Honing Board Once a gouge has been correctly sharpened, it does not much later to put the edge back to absolute sharpness. This is the natural wear away from the edge of the use and not as a result of it being damaged. When all it takes some honing, a bringing back to razor sharpness, and not a true sharpening, there is something very practical that you can do about it.
One way to bring your board back to the blank state is to make a gouge honing board. Instead of using a fine sharpening stone quality at all times, you can use your card handy to bring a running board. These are the things you'll need:
? Solid rectangular block of softwood, 3 "x 2" x 1 "(LxWxH)
? Composed rouging, fine abrasive powder or paste
? Bench knife, fixed blade of less than 5 "long
? Tool with a non-sharpened edge / an old knife
Gouges? For the running
The wood block should not be specified dimensions, just close enough. If you want more control, it could easily be longer or wider. The section break that you create can be placed anywhere on the block that suits you best. After all, is what this board is running about: your comfort and ease in honing gouges.
There are many types of compounds rouging. What you want is a material that can coat a surface with an easy application, especially in troughs and tight corners. You certainly do not want a rouging or polish that comes in the form of a solid block. It would be almost useless in this application.
A bench knife is preferred because of the small fixed blade. You do not need much of a point to make the board running. You just need something solid and strong. Make sure the knife has been sharpened before you begin.
Here we go. Take the wood block and decide where you want to create the finishing section. If you follow the dimensions given, just start on a half-inch to the interior side of the width. Take sharp gouge and cut a concave or positive in the wood. Using the exact dimensions of the gouge as a guide, do not extend beyond the depth of the gouge is wide.
Now, you'll cut the convex profile in the wood or negative. Take the gouge even used to make the positive profile. Move within the same block of wood about one quarter inch. It would be a quarter of an inch inside the positive brand image. Take the gouge and turn it so that depression is upside down. In this position, cut the negative profile of the gouge in the wood. Take care not to extend beyond the convex curve of the gouge is wide.
You made a gouge honing board. Well done. Use the knife bench instead of edges between the carved profiles. It would not be difficult for you to create a special honing board with positive and negative profiles for each of your regularly used gouges.
Now you prepare for break. Take rouging compound and, using an old knife or a tool with a sharp edge not also lay the compounds throughout the trough of the positive profile. When finished, apply the compound rouging evenly over the convex surface of the negative profile. Take the gouge slowly reversed pack up in tight turns negative profile. And now your gouge honing board is ready.
When it comes time to use it, just follow the bevel of the gouge. For the positive profile, put a gouge in the trough, which should correspond closely with Nice and the compound rouging added, and pull your gouge in the cavity with the bevel flat on the outside running board. For the negative profile, turn your gouge over and lay on the convex surface and tight turns. With the inside bevel color on the wood, gently pull down the window.
