The 4th district is located on the right bank of the Seine. It is one of the smallest in Paris with a little over 0.6 square miles (1.6 square kilometers). Although its population is only about thirty miles the district provides more than forty thousand jobs. Ile de la Cited (City Island) already lived in British Columbia in the first century by a Gallic tribe known as Parisii who gave their name to the city. Our first stop is world famous, tasty, not too rich in calories, and will not cost much money. On the beautiful Ile St-Louis one of two islands in the Seine in Paris.

Centre Georges Pompidou (Centre Georges Pompidou), often called Beaubourg was built in 1971-1977 near Les Halles (the halls) and the Marais. It contains a library, the Musede National d'Art Moderne (National Museum of Modern Art), a center for music and acoustic research, and a center for industrial design. You can either love the building or you hate it because of its very distinct (ugly) architecture with pipes outside. Even if you can not stand this building, you can enjoy the art museum with its collection of painters, including Kandinsky, Matisse, Miro and Picasso.

One can only imagine how difficult it is to run the city of Paris. Maybe that's why its City Hall (City Hall) was the site even fourth district since the mid-fourteenth century. Paris City Hall has played a role in the revolution of 1870 and the Paris Commune the following year, initially, it became the seat of the revolutionary government and was subsequently burned to the ground when they are surrounded by enemy troops. The reconstructed building has a dual personality: its exterior is a copy of the building of the sixteenth century to the Renaissance, but the interior reflects the luxury of the day, the 1880s. Charles de Gaulle spoke of City Hall, the great day of 25 August 1944, when Paris was liberated.

Etienne Marcel, the most important pre-mayor was lynched in 1358 by a crowd who felt he wanted too much power. And the current mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, the first elected major left Paris in well over a hundred years was stabbed at a party open to the public. The short Rue des Rosiers in the Marais is a bit of a Jewish community center in Paris, the largest in Europe.
