The foundation has been to make a difference in the lives of women with breast cancer over 20 years. Susan G. Komen and her sister Nancy grew up in Peoria, Illinois. After Susan went to college, she returned to Peoria to marry his high school sweetheart. She had a great life until she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Twenty years ago, breast cancer has not been well understood and family physicians are not trained to treat it. If Susan G. Komen was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, her chances of recovery would have been much higher than they were 20 years ago.

Susan G. Komen not only decided to conquer breast cancer, but also in the process to make it easier for all women who have been fighting it. One of the things that Susan wanted to do was to get the hospital waiting rooms more cheerful for women fighting against breast cancer. Susan G. Komen has gone through a painful experience with breast cancer and, consequently, her sister Nancy promised to do everything she could to help other women with breast cancer. In 1982, Nancy Brinkman founded the Susan G. Foundation Komen in memory of her sister Susan, who died of breast cancer.
